Description:
Swanington is a small town located in Benton County. The interlocking tower at Swanington controlled the crossing with the Chicago, Attica & Southern, the west end of the double track from Templeton, and the east end of a passing siding on the NYC. The CA&S tracks were abandoned sometime in 1945 leaving Swanington to just control the end of the double track and east end of the passing siding. The April 28, 1957 NYC Employee Timetable lists Swanington as being open continuously functioning as a train order office, manual block station, and manual block station for movement against current of traffic. Swanington was closed sometime between October 1958 and April 1959. The double track was removed with the westbound main shortened into 8800' siding extending from Templeton. Very little of Swanington remains except for a pile of concrete that may have been the tower's foundation. The siding is still in place and is used by Demeter Grain to load covered hoppers. The Kankakee, Beaverville and Southern railroad operates through here about three times a week.
